We Play Well With Others The Racquet Club is a unique athletic and social Club in the heart of Philadelphia that makes old-world pleasures new. Hailed by squash enthusiasts as the preeminent squash club of Philadelphia, the Club also offers relaxed dining, a lively social calendar, active affinity Clubs, guest rooms, an indoor pool, and more. The Club is home to several celebrated squash legends that have played on the professional circuit and many of the Club’s members consider the Club to be their home away from home. In a fast-paced world, The Racquet Club is an oasis in the city, a place where members of all backgrounds meet one another for a game, a meal, or a swim. They come to unplug and unwind, to encounter a new wine or an invitation to sail. It’s where stories are passed along and lifelong connections are made. It’s a multi-generational Club where men, women, teens, and kids can connect and family milestones are celebrated in an elegant setting.
Racquets Home to one of only seven racquets courts in the country, members at the Club have an unrivaled passion for this unique game. Originating in English prisons and initially played with rocks against the prison wall, racquets has developed into the fastest racquet sport in the world. During events and tournaments, you will find a raucous Racquet Club crowd cheering on the brave players who dare to engage in the sport. The Club has hosted several major national and international tournaments. The Racquets Singles World Championship, the Court Tennis US Open, qualifying matches for The Squash US Open, The Tompkins Cup (SDA Pro Tour), and Intercollegiate Squash Doubles National Championship. The U.S. Squash Hall of Fame was briefly located at the Club until moving to Yale University. It’s Impossible To Not Join the Fun The Clubhouse is home to all levels of racquet enthusiasts, and within its historic walls are one court tennis court, six international squash courts, the country’s first doubles squash court, and a racquets court.
Squash The Racquet Club is home to six international squash courts and one doubles squash court. The Club’s athletic professionals are committed to educating new players about the game and can set up matches with other members for those that have advanced skills. The Pro Shop schedules frequent clinics, Club tournaments, intra-Club matches, and has developed a strong junior squash program for players of all levels. The Club was the site of the invention of squash doubles in 1907 by Frederich C. Tompkins, a former court tennis and racquets professional.
Court Tennis The Club is home to one of only 11 court tennis courts in the country, and was recently renovated. Dating back to the 12th Century, the game of court tennis was widely recognized as the “sport of kings” thanks in part to Henry VIII’s fondness of the game. Not to be confused with lawn tennis, court tennis spawned the game played at Wimbledon. The Club’s athletic director, Rob Whitehouse, is a United States Court Tennis Hall of Fame inductee and is eager to teach new members the ins and outs of the game.
Indoor Swimming Pool
The indoor swimming pool’s unique design, equally as long as it is wide (35’ x 35’), provides ample space casual swimming and calisthenic exercise. Many members utilize the pool for a quick dip after a hard workout in the Fitness Center or after a steam in the connecting men’s locker room. The pool is welcome to be used by both our male and female members.
Fitness The Club has a newly renovated fitness center, open 24 hours a day, that is included with the cost of dues. Additionally, members have access to complimentary classes such as Pilates, Stretch and Sculpt, High Intensity Interval Training, and Bootcamp throughout the week during the afternoons and evenings. Personal training and massage therapy are available by appointment.
Overnight Accommodations
The Club has 13 elegantly appointed guest rooms that are exclusively designed to complement the beautifully unique architecture of this renowned and historic Club. Overnight guests have access to the Club’s fitness center, sauna and steam rooms, and complimentary “Grab-and-Go” breakfast. Members are welcome to sponsors guests to stay at the Club.
Private Social Events The Racquet Club offers ten unique and versatile spaces for private events of any scale and occasion. The Club is the perfect venue for every function including, weddings, small social gatherings, non-profit fundraisers, festive holiday parties and grand galas. Our staff is dedicated to creating and executing your event and tending to every detail. We offer an array of menus to choose from; our event planners and chefs would be delighted to tailor a custom menu selection for any event.
The Racquet Club of Philadelphia has one of the most extensive reciprocal lists of any Club in the country, having relationships with more than 240 Clubs worldwide.
